My Library’s Top 3 Circulating Print Picture Books and Top 15 Digital Picture Book Checkouts Of 2020

Now, you may remember that I usually post the top circulating print picture books. That is, the picture books that were checked out most often from the Community Library of DeWitt and Jamesville in a given year. But this year, due to the pandemic, I’m going to do things a bit differently. The library was completely closed for a couple of months, and for about six months, we’ve been offering curbside pickup. I share all this just to say that circulation of print picture books has been down this year, though it has picked up.

But checkouts of digital picture books have gone up, up, up. So I’ll share the top 3 circulating print picture book of 2020 for my library. And then I’ll list the top 15 digital picture books for my library’s entire system, consisting of 31 county libraries.

Which picture books were checked out most often from the Community Library of DeWitt and Jamesville in 2019?

There was a tie for the top spot between two wonderful stand-alone titles! That’s right, a movie or TV tie-in did not take the top spot this year! Shocking, I know! But also pretty awesome!

The Library’s top circulating books were The Color Monster : A Story About Emotions and Sophie Johnson : Unicorn Expert. Both circulated 20 times. This may seem like a small number, but when you consider that each book may be checked out for up to 3 weeks (21 days), that 20 times means the top books were checked out over and over for the entire year!

Circulated 20 Times:

Of course, there are a couple of movie and TV tie-ins in the Top 10. Paw Patrol is on the list again this year with a book that made the list last year, and, in fact, Real Rescue Dogs circulated one time more this year than last.

And Llama Llama–from the Netflix series, not the book series–is on the list as well.

The rest of the Top 10 spotlights a terrific mix of picture books featuring ever-popular characters, such as penguins, trucks, and dinosaurs. Two surprising, but well deserving, titles made the list too: Tomie dePaola’s Quiet and Brian Lies’ The Rough Patch. Check out all of the covers below.

Which picture books were checked out most often from the Community Library of DeWitt and Jamesville in 2018?

Our top circulating picture book will probably not be a big surprise: Disney Frozen. Movie and TV tie-ins will forever be popular with kids. It’s a fact of life. This particular version is actually a “look and find” concept book–not a true picture book, in my opinion, but the library has it cataloged as a picture book AND it circulated a whopping 20 times, so I felt it was worth noting in this year’s list.

Also making the list this year is the top book of 2017: Ellie in Concert. This book actually circulated two more times in 2018 (19 times) than in 2017 (17 times), yet wasn’t number one this time around. Interesting, huh?

The rest of the books in our top 21 include the ever-popular series Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol, another Frozen tie-in starring Olaf the snowman, and (Yay!) a beautiful mix of new and old stand alone favorites.

Which picture books were checked out most often from the Community Library of DeWitt and Jamesville in 2017?

I report, rather happily (and surprisingly), that no TV or movie tie-ins made the top 17 in 2017! Though, had I expanded the list to top 25, we’d certainly see Peppa Pig (who was very popular in 2016). Had I expanded to top 30, we’d have seen Disney’s Frozen.

Not surprisingly, Pete the Cat makes an appearance, as does Mo Willem’s pigeon and Thomas the Tank Engine. The rest of the books on the list are a wonderful mix of titles and characters. The top book of 2017 stars a little elephant that you just might recognize.

Top 19 Circulating Picture Books Of 2016

It is always interesting to discover which picture books have been checked out most frequently from the DeWitt Community Library. Not surprisingly, this year’s list is a mix of new and old favorites, and titles featuring characters from popular TV series and movies.

Peppa Pig dominated the list this year, appearing three times below, and if I had continued past 19, we would have seen Peppa many more times.

Disney titles were popular, as were a couple of Anna Dewdney’s LLama LLama books.

Curious George made the list too, along with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Wars.

New favorites include One Big Family (which tied with Cinderella for most circulated), Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast, Race Car Count, Ninja Baby, and others.

Top 15 Circulating Picture Books Of 2015

The picture books that have been checked out most frequently in 2015 from the DeWitt Community Library are an interesting mix of new and not-so-new titles. The Maisy books continue to be a popular choice, appearing 4 times in this list. Pigeon made the list, as did Pete the Cat and Spider-Man. Also on the list, my personal favorite of the lot, The Bear Ate Your Sandwich, which is tied with The Day the Crayons Quit and Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs. Not far behind is The Book With No Pictures.

The top book, Maisy Goes Camping, circulated 19 times. That may not sound like much, but when you consider that each book may be checked out for up to 3 weeks (21 days), that 19 times means it was constantly checked out. Interesting, Huh?
